At first glance, Deepwater Horizon 1 by Demiak seems to be an idyllic scene: a small cabin set over water. But look a little closer - that's blood in the water. There's a dinghy tied to a porch rail, but no people are to be seen. Instead of lush surroundings, the cabin sits amid dead trees, and just a few leaves of wilted green plants are seen in the water. One of the works seen in the exhibit Dutch InvasiON at Box 13 ArtSpace and Williams Tower Gallery, Deepwater Horizon 1 is typical of Demiak's work. He reconstructs natural disasters and catastrophes in small-scale models in hyperrealistic photographs of the models, but without regret or sympathy. Instead, it is a simple and straightforward indictment of society, as if to say, "See what we've done."
