"Icônes et autres re-créations" exprime la fascination de Michael Bastow pour le corps des femmes ; ces femmes qu’il couche au pastel doux sur des papiers à la forme, chauds et froissés. Comme des draps après l’étreinte.

En 2001, Michael Bastow entreprend la restauration et la décoration de la chapelle Saint-Alexis à Malaucène dans le Vaucluse. La décoration prend finalement la forme d’une fresque "éphémère", une superposition de feuilles colorées et de transparences. La recherche iconique pour les sept âges de la femme que l’artiste a pris pour thème, le conduit à réinterpréter les modèles de représentations des icônes byzantines, des fétiches africains et d’autres encore, léguées par l’histoire de l’art.

"Icônes et autres recréations" se veut la continuation de ce travail. En utilisant des collages de papier et d’autres matériaux, en cannibalisant et en absorbant ses propres pastels, il parvient à créer des portraits au symbolisme plus puissant et plus chargé que les originaux.

“Icônes et autres re-créations” express Michael Bastow’s fascination for female bodies; these women he creates with pastel on raw paper that appears hot and crumpled, just like sheets after lovemaking.

In 2001, he began the restoration and decoration of the Saint Alexis chapel in Malaucene. This decoration finally took the shape of an "ephemeral" fresco, a superposition of drawings on transparent and colored sheets of paper flowing over the walls of the chapel. The iconic research undertaken for the seven ages of woman which he had taken as a theme, led the artist to reinterpret images of woman bequeathed by art history, from Byzantine icons to African fetishes.

"Icônes et autres re-créations" is a continuation of this work. Using collages of paper and other materials, and cannibalising and absorbing his own pastels, he succeeds in creating portraits more powerful and symbolically charged than the originals.
