"Places & Traces" marque la première exposition personnelle à Paris de l’artiste néerlandais Maarten Demmink. Dans le prolongement de ses oeuvres sur les catastrophes naturelles, il présente un ensemble de récentes peintures de paysage, issues des séries "Earth", "Labyrinths of Clay", "Ask the Dust", "The Book of Sand" et "Urban Tissue".

Réalisée pendant le confinement comme une échappatoire à l’impossibilité de voyager, la série "Earth" est basée sur des images satellitaires glanées sur Google Earth. Maarten Demmink s’est intéressé à des régions non-touristiques et désertiques d’Afrique subsaharienne et de la péninsule arabique où il n’ira probablement jamais : Koutougou, Abéché, Gorom, Afar, Aminuis, Almansoria, Hadramaut… Les défauts de ces vues aériennes, qui reprennent le format 16:9 des écrans, réduisent ces paysages aussi lointains que mystérieux à un ensemble indistinct, déréalisé, de taches et de lignes. À côté, les peintures presque matiéristes de "Labyrinths of Clay", dans lesquelles des immensités sont gagnées par la montée des eaux et envahies d’excroissances informelles, évoquent les scénarios des changements climatiques.

En contrepoint de ces images tirées de la High-Tech et des prévisions scientifiques, l’exposition juxtapose des oeuvres des séries "Ask the Dust", "The Book of Sand" et "Urban Tissue" qui font dialoguer pêle-mêle zones urbaines, sites archéologiques ou patrimoniaux, Bouddhas de la vallée de Bâmiyân en Afghanistan détruits par les Talibans et visions fantasmées de la Toscane... Ce panorama mental et global qui associe le passé et le présent, l’espace réel et imaginaire, la volonté humaine et les lois de la nature, nous invite à examiner le monde sous un autre angle.  

Le titre "Places & Traces" traduit la démarche de Maarten Demmink : à travers le motif du paysage façonné par l’activité humaine, il cherche à consigner l’instabilité et l’invisible, les traces laissées par la nature, le temps et l’histoire. 

Né en 1967 aux Pays-Bas, Maarten Demmink vit et travaille à La Haye. Diplômé de l’Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de La Haye, il revisite le genre de la peinture de paysage et d’histoire à la lumière de ses préoccupations environnementales, en utilisant différents médiums : peintures, sculptures murales, mixed media et photographies mises en scène. Principalement montré en Europe et aux États-Unis, son travail a été récompensé de plusieurs prix.

"Places & Traces" marks the first solo show of Dutch artist Maarten Demmink in Paris. Following up his work on natural disasters, he presents some recent landscape paintings from the series "Earth", "Labyrinths of Clay", "Ask the Dust", "The Book of Sand" and "Urban Tissue".

Executed during the lockdown as a way to escape from the impossibility of travelling, the "Earth" series is based on satellite images gathered on Google Earth. Maarten Demmink was interested in non-touristic and deserted regions of Sub-Saharan Africa and the Arabian Peninsula where he would probably never go: Koutougou, Abéché, Gorom, Afar, Aminuis, Almansoria, Hadramaut... The flaws of these aerial views, which use the 16:9 screen aspect ratio, reduce these distant and mysterious landscapes to an indistinct and derealized set of spots and lines. Alongside, almost matterist paintings from "Labyrinths of Clay", in which vastnesses are overwhelmed by the rising waters and invaded by informel growths, evoke scenarios of climate change.

As a contrast to these images from High-Tech and scientific forecasts, the exhibition juxtaposes works from the series "Ask the Dust", "The Book of Sand" and "Urban Tissue" that connect urban areas, archaeological or heritage sites, Buddhas of the Bamiyan Valley in Afghanistan destroyed by the Taliban, fantasized visions of Tuscany... This mental and global panorama that combines past and present, real and imaginary space, human will and laws of nature, invites us to look at the world from another point of view.

The title "Places & Traces" expresses Maarten Demmink's approach: through the motif of landscape shaped by human activity, he seeks to record the instability and the invisible, the traces left by nature, time and history.

Born in 1967 in the Netherlands, Maarten Demmink lives and works in The Hague. Graduated of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, he revisits the genre of landscape and history painting in the light of his environmental concerns, using different mediums: paintings, wall sculptures, mixed media and staged photographs. Mainly showed in Europe and in the United States, his work has been awarded several prizes.
