Born in 1990, María Dávila lives in Granada where she is currently preparing a PhD thesis at the University of Granada.
María Dávila works by series, each one is the result of a meticulous research based on photographic or cinematographic material : family archives, still from movies or documentary films. A contrario, her creative process is particularly fast. A first white primer paint, followed by black or colored layers. And then, before drying, the surface is rubbed with a rag to reveal dynamic light areas and a vibrant richness of tones. A process which demands no hesitation or pentimento.
Her series "Anagnórisis – La trama" (2014) seeks to highlight the underlying similitudes between fiction and documentary films, with an emphasis on the interpretive nature of our relationship to reality. From an album of family photographs, "Solsticio" (2015) deals with our inability to recognize our image and the non-correspondence between memory and lived experience. "Dramatis personae" (2015) is about the act of looking and being looked at in the construction of identity, through a dialogue with a cinematographic form based on narrative (de)construction such as Surrealist or Nouvelle Vague films.
By the appropriation of other visual languages, María Dávila explores the limits of the visible and the boundaries between fiction and reality. Like ghostly presences, her protagonists appear out of a blurred and grisaille atmosphere - as unstable as perception - which reminds the spectral origin associated to every representation of the visible. Her painting refers continuously to the artwork as area of the ineffable and to our condition of viewer, frustrated in our desires and expectations by the silence of painting. But it also claims to be revelation, projection screen for our fantasies, invitation to test illusion.
